... en what conversations family businesses need to have precisely in times of transition

In society, we are at a tipping point of a changing zeitgeist in which the need for security, stability and trust is increasing. This presents family businesses with unique opportunities, as they can offer grip, authenticity and continuity. Indeed, family businesses have a clear focus on the long term and building something sustainable, focused on the next generation.

This long-term thinking is not a marketing strategy, but a rooted intrinsic value within the culture of family businesses. Many family businesses are not yet taking sufficient advantage of the opportunities of the present time. Now is precisely the time to turn the challenges of our time into valuable opportunities. Do this together with the different generations and involved colleagues; from different perspectives.

In the next 5 years, many family businesses will be passed on. Passed on to the next generation(s). What conversations are important in this?

It takes more than just the business and financial side. Devoting time and attention to the shared perspective is necessary. By imagining together, stepping outside your own world, and discovering with different generations what each generation wants to leave behind and what you want to work on together. So this goes beyond just the business transfer; it's about legacy, drives, desires and the greater responsibility you bear as a business. In this way, family businesses can not only play a leading role in the changing society, but also create a sustainable future for the next generations.

These valuable conversations took place at our kitchen table. On Oct. 3, we brought together six inspiring family business leaders, including Monarch, Driessen Group, Elho, Berden, Westerduin and Royal Smilde, to share insights on working with family businesses. Jempi Moens, founder of Fresh Forward and the LUNAR Institute, and author of the book SOURCE, How organizations get moving, together with Claire Bijl and Fabiënne Peeters shared our experiences about transitions within family businesses. Jempi highlighted the five keys of people-centered change power from his book.

At our Service Station in Hilversum, a place that feels like home, we then enjoyed a delicious homemade curry prepared by our own "chef" Els. For many, the intimate setting brought back memories of the old days when business associates were invited to their homes for a meal. After all, it was always around the kitchen table where the real conversations took place.

In short, it was an evening full of valuable knowledge, insights, connection and genuine conversations about passing on traditions and strategies to the next generation. Just the way we prefer: at our kitchen table!
